Welcome to this fan website dedicated to John Thaw (1942 – 2002). At the time of writing, this site is a work in progress. It is my hope and intention that it will become an archive by which to remember John’s varied career in television, film and theatre.
Further information will be added regularly, making this an evolving, ongoing project. There is a great deal of information to add!
My inspiration for this website has come from two places. Firstly, general discussion on social media shows not only that there is still a great deal of interest in John Thaw as an actor, but also that there may be some of his work of which fans are not aware. Variations of “I didn’t know he did that -will have to watch it!” have often cropped up on posts sharing information of earlier TV series, episodes, films, etc.
Secondly, after reading Sheila Hancock’s wonderful book The Two of Us: My Life With John Thaw, I couldn’t forget an excerpt from her diary in the months following John’s death, which she quotes in the book. “John will be forgotten”, writes Sheila. “There will be occasional reruns of his programmes, but they will start to look dated. There’s a wonderful website dedicated to him.” (p.288).
Over twenty years after his death, it is clear that so many of us are not ready to forget John.
However, the website Sheila cites, Johnthaw.topcities.com/johnthaw is sadly no longer available. The gap left by its absence has inspired me to create my own website dedicated to John Thaw.
